Construction Methods and Why They Matter
Construction determines durability, repairability, flexibility and cost. Specifying it removes the largest single variable in footwear quality.

Sole separation on cemented footwear is the most common warranty complaint in the category, and it is almost always adhesive quality or inadequate surface preparation before bonding. We specify bond strength and require peel testing at inspection rather than accepting a visual check.
Lasts, Sizing and Fit
The last is the mould the shoe is built around, and it controls fit far more than the stated size. Two factories using the same size marking on different lasts will produce shoes that fit differently. Practical points:
- Confirm which sizing system applies, since EU, UK, US and Chinese sizing all differ and Chinese lasts often run narrow
- Specify width fitting, not just length
- Approve fit samples in a mid size and at both ends of the size run, because grading errors appear at the extremes
- Request the last profile be retained for repeat orders so fit stays consistent
- Confirm whether new tooling is required, as custom lasts and moulds carry real cost and lead time
Materials
Upper materials range from full grain and split leather through PU, microfibre, canvas and engineered mesh. Terminology is used loosely by suppliers, so “genuine leather” needs defining: full grain, corrected grain and bonded leather are very different products at very different prices. Soles are typically rubber, EVA, TPR, PU or combinations, each with different abrasion resistance and slip performance.
Compliance and Testing
- REACH restrictions, including chromium VI limits in leather, which is the most frequent footwear compliance failure
- Azo dye and phthalate restrictions on dyed materials and synthetic components
- PFAS restrictions where water-repellent treatments are used
- EU PPE Regulation and EN ISO 20345 for safety footwear, which cannot be sold without valid notified body certification
- Slip resistance testing where slip performance is claimed on packaging
- Material labelling, since EU rules require the upper, lining and outsole materials to be identified

Frequently Asked Questions
What minimum order quantities do footwear manufacturers in China accept?
Usually 300 to 600 pairs per style per colour with existing lasts and soles, spread across a size run. Custom tooling pushes minimums considerably higher because moulds must be amortised.
Why do soles come apart, and can it be prevented?
Nearly always poor adhesive or insufficient surface preparation before bonding. It is prevented by specifying construction and adhesive, and by peel testing samples from actual production rather than a pre-production sample.
How do I make sure sizing matches my market?
Supply a reference shoe that fits correctly, confirm the sizing system in writing, specify width, and approve fit samples across the size run. Do not rely on a size label alone.
Can you supply certified safety footwear?
Only from suppliers holding genuine EN ISO 20345 certification from a notified body, with test reports we have verified. Safety footwear without valid certification cannot legally be sold as protective equipment.
How long does footwear production take?
Sampling three to five weeks, bulk production forty-five to seventy-five days after approval. New tooling adds several weeks, so seasonal ranges need planning well ahead of your in-store date.
