Safety Standards You Cannot Skip
These are legal requirements, not optional quality extras. Enforcement is active and penalties fall on the importer, not the factory.
Cords and Drawstrings
EN 14682 governs cords and drawstrings on children’s clothing in Europe, restricting them at the neck and hood for younger age groups because of strangulation risk. The equivalent US guidance is enforced by the CPSC. This single standard is the most common reason childrenswear is recalled, and factories producing mainly for the domestic Chinese market are frequently unaware of it.
Chemical Safety
REACH and EN 71-3 control migration of heavy metals, while phthalate and AZO dye restrictions apply to prints, coatings and plastic trims. In the United States, CPSIA sets lead and phthalate limits considerably tighter than adult equivalents.
Small Parts and Mechanical Hazards
Buttons, poppers, appliques, bows and decorative trims must pass pull testing so they cannot detach and become a choking hazard. This is tested to a defined force, not by feel.
Flammability
Children’s nightwear carries specific flammability requirements in the UK, EU and US, with mandatory labelling. Getting this wrong on a pyjama range is a recall, not a warning.
CPC and Conformity Documentation
Selling into the United States requires a Children’s Product Certificate supported by third-party testing from a CPSC-accepted laboratory. Amazon and most major retailers will request it before listing. We arrange this testing where the factory cannot supply it.

Sizing by Age
Children’s sizing is graded by age or height, and the two systems do not map cleanly between markets. A garment labelled 3-4 years in China is frequently smaller than a UK or European 3-4. Provide a graded chart in centimetres with height ranges, approve fit samples at both the smallest and largest sizes in the range, and specify whether measurements are body or garment. Growth allowance also needs deciding deliberately, since parents judge value partly on how long a garment lasts.
